Henry Kissinger: Fingerspitzengefuhl
Henry Kissinger: Fingerspitzengefuhl
Click the link above for a 1986 Time magazine article about Henry Kissenger, written by Bonnie Angelo.
How does a concept translate? Hard to say without being fluent in two languages, and although I've studied German, this word, Fingerspitzengefuhl was never one I recall studying. Other fabulous German concept words are pretty well known: Shadenfreude, or Wanderlust for example. I'll need a scholar with the German equivalent of the Oxford English Dictionary to educate me further on Fingerspitzengefuhl in the native tongue, but the simple definition, in English, suggests a military origin.
The concept of Situation Awareness similarly has been adopted by the US military, and therefore the general idea, if not the fleshed out cognitive ergonimic specifics of SA, might be what the German word conveyed, whether used by Germans or imported into English.
Now that the concept of Situation Awareness has been subject to, ahem, American engineering and application, I would be interested in knowing how SA concepts play in Germany, and whether the Germans feel Fingerspitzengefuhl still can be used to refer to the fully fleshed out idea.
Language scholars interested in German and English may want to look at this example of an older German concept word, a similar and perhaps related contemporary technical English concept, and the migration of the idea. Perhaps the Japanese, who borrow foreign words too, have already followed this idea along. We might share a taste of their linguistic salad of borrowed English and imported German, knitted together with Japanese.

Scribes work the EMR, Physicians work the patient
Despite the push for electronic health/medical records (EHR/EMR), many physicians remain annoyed with current technology. The LA Times has an article about the use of scribes often pre-med students, who handle the documentation. EMR/Vendors were contacted for the story, but so far declined to comment.
The companies that develop and sell electronic medical records systems are "in total denial" about how complicated they are for doctors to use, Strumpf said. "They know these systems need scribes," he said. "They work with us to train our scribes on their systems, but they don't want to be public about it."
Calls and e-mails to two major suppliers, Epic Systems Corp. of Verona, Wis., and GE Centricity of Burlington, Vt., were not returned.

DrRich, of course (wise beyond even his not-inconsiderable-years), understands that in certain cases, free-ranging paranoia may not be the healthiest of conditions. So, Fixing American Healthcare not only shows you who’s out to get you, and why, and how they propose to do it, but also shows you what you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones. For paranoia is not always so bad, so long as it’s constructively actionable.

Managed Care // Primary Care // thoughts from the original Dr. Rich
Fellow physician, Dr. Karthik Ramaswamy, suggested Dr. Richard Fogoros blog titled Covert Rationing. Karthik is an 'EP', a pacemaker implanting and accessory conduction pathway ablating cardiologist. Dr. Fogoros wrote 'the' book on EP, but has broader concerns. The link below connects to a post where Dr. Rich (the original) opines on the plight of the patient and the physician under the management schemes, that might be actually out to get us even if we are paranoid...
